Luxury hotels are still fighting for customers; creative, high-end amenities and services help them stand out.
At The Lowell New York hotel, four-legged guests can now dine on freshly-made meals ordered through room service without having to lift a paw. “The new Pet Room Service Menu provides a choice of meals prepared a la minute as well as a selection of canine snacks, amenities and accessories so posh pets are not only healthy and comfortable, but also fashionable.”
Room service is available around the clock, with choices like filet mignon tartar and organic buffalo marrow bone. For true indulgence and a rare treat there is Doggy Ice Cream for dessert.
This new Pet Room Service Menu is in addition to the pampering welcome that canine guests receive, which includes beds, water bowls, complimentary treats or toys.
Hello Kitty’s luxurious Doghouse
This luxury doghouse was created in 2007 for a sales event at a department store in Tokyo and designed in collaboration with a maker of high-end pet goods. It’s worth3.9 million yen (32,000 dollars).
The most expensive doghouse in the world, large enough for a Chihuahua or terrier, is decorated with 7,600 crystal beads and has a pillow in the shape of Hello Kitty’s face.
“There’s been a boom in luxury couches for larger dogs, so we thought there might be room for something new,” said a Sanrio (the company behind Hello Kitty) spokesman.
Products created in previous years for the week-long sales event aimed at adult Kitty fans include a Kitty-themed “i” minicar from Mitsubishi Motors Co. and a Hello Kitty Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, which sold last year for $20,460, he said.
Get your dog a $100,000 clone
BioArts International will next month hold an online auction to give five wealthy pet owners the opportunity to have their dogs cloned.
The successful bidders will be able to make a genetically-identical copy of an existing pet - or create a new puppy from the frozen tissue of a long-dead pet.
Bidding is expected to begin at more than $100,000.
While pet cloning may appear little more than a bizarre and morbid extravagance for the super-rich, it comes at a high price.
Cloning is still a hit-and-miss procedure and for almost every success comes a stream of miscarriages, stillbirths and premature deaths.
Animal welfare campaigners and ethical experts have condemned the move, accusing BioArts - the company offering the service - of exploiting owners’ fears over losing a pet.
But Lou Hawthorne, head of BioArts, believes there will be no shortage of those willing to pay for the chance to copy a beloved dog.
“It could easily end up being price comparable to a luxury car, or a vacation house,’ he said. ‘It’s not going to be cheap. But then the process isn’t cheap.
